Food for Thought

The Ultimate Sacrifice

For the Anzac centenary in 2015 a beautiful cross of remembrance was erected on the foreshore at Lake Bonney, Barmera. We have used this photo for our Easter postcards letterbox drop.

It is wonderful to see the cross outlined against the magnificent Riverland sunsets as I look down the main street or across the oval.

As I do, I can’t help but think, ‘Jesus was there first.

In April we celebrated two significant remembrance events. Easter and Anzac Day. The attendance at Anzac observances seems to have risen and gained more significance in later years as the numbers in church seem to decline. I wonder if Aussies are looking to find something that gives meaning to life, something to believe in and aspire to. And so they look to the sacrifice of others who fought on our behalf in various conflicts.. There are so many stories of heroism and the laying down of life.

Jesus said there was no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. And so we remember ad celebrate.

But this love for fellow humans comes, as does all love, from God who sent the Son Jesus to give life to all through his death and risen life. Many have given their lives as the ultimate sacrifice but Jesus is the ultimate ultimate sacrifice who gives us life and hope in God as we live our lives day by day.

The time has come to say “thank you and good bye”

There is a sense of sadness within the COMN, but also at the same time a sense of excitement for 2 of our Ministers who are embarking upon a “New Chapter” in their lives.

Rev. Angie Griffin

After being in Placement in 4 COMN congregations over a 15-year period; Seaton, Western Link, Vermont, and currently Lefevre, the time has come for Angie and Neil to pack up house and move to Angie’s new Placement in Victoria.

Angie, we wish you all the best in your new Placement and pray that God will continue to bless your Ministry.

Rev Wes Howland

We also say good-bye to Wes who is journeying into the new chapter of retirement. Wes has been at West Lakes United Church since July 2011, after his placement at The Corner, which followed on from the Gawler 2004-2006 and Keith Tintinara Parish 1999-2004

Wes, we wish you all the best for your retirement and pray that God will continue to bless your Ministry in whichever form it takes.

Thank you both for your wisdom and support you have given over the past years and we wish you, Angie and Neil, Wes and Lyn all the best for the new journey ahead.

You will be greatly missed, but we do wish you well in the new journey which lays ahead.

COMN Grants for 2018

Community Outreach Mission Network (COMN) Outreach Grants are provided to assist member congregations in their community outreach. Funded from the members’ contributions to the Network, these grants are a once off grant of up to $1,000 for a community outreach initiative and they are provided for:

  • a new outreach initiative; or
  • expanding a current outreach; or
  • raising the profile of a congregation in their local community.

Member congregations receiving these grants are expected to share the progress and results of their grant funded community outreach initiatives with the rest of the Network at one of our gatherings.

For a member congregation’s application to be considered by the COMN Grants Committee, a member congregation will need to have paid all of their Network contributions for the 12 months preceding their application and the congregation’s application will need to show how their new initiative:

  • is a response to a perceived community need;
  • will be promoted in their community;
  • is to be funded;
  • will be evaluated; and
  • aligns with their mission goals.

It would be only in unusual circumstances that a member congregation would receive more than one COMN grant in the same year.

Applications are to authorised by two of the congregation’s leadership team and e-mailed to the COMN Pastoral and Administrative Officer:

Brian Dunstan COMN Pastoral and Administrative Officer

if you are unable to email  send it via mail 143 Woolnough Road Largs Bay 5016

Any queries call Brian on 041 399 4837
